Isabel Maloney

I am a PhD student in the Department of French at the University of Cambridge. My research focuses on how cultures of censorship altered the narrative logic of French novels in the second half of the nineteenth century. I am particularly interested in narrative omissions, and how politically motivated ‘unsaidness’ fostered the period’s aesthetic fixation on sexual transgression. My work explores these questions in relation to the volatile political landscape of nineteenth-century France, looking at how the changing of regimes provided different contexts of censorship or freedom of the press, and how this affected the novel. My project is supervised by Dr Claire White. Before starting my PhD, I received my BA and MPhil from Cambridge and was awarded the Henry Fellowship at Yale University.
