As an undergraduate I read English at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where I took a double starred first and the Betha Wolferstan Rylands Prize, before completing the MPhil in English Studies at Trinity College (also Cambridge) under a Dunlevie King's Hall Studentship. I remain at Trinity for my doctoral studies, which are generously funded by the DTP. I also hold an honorary Cambridge International Scholarship from the Cambridge Trust.
My research examines the genres and contexts of early modern consolatory writing from Thomas More's Tower works to John Milton's final poems. Within this broad scope I am particularly interested in the religious politics and literary implications of the Reformation, the early modern Bible, classical reception and patristics, moral philosophy and theories of the passions, rhetoric, and translation. Beyond the PhD I maintain an interest in early modern natural philosophy, and especially the works of Francis Bacon.
